Hi! As my first blog post, I thought I should do dessert ( Since everyone loves dessert, right?!). You can use any kind of apple for this recipe but I decided to use green apples. They are a little bit more tart so you have to add a few tablespoons more of the white sugar ( I will list it again in the recipe). I hope you enjoy!
Apple Pie Recipe:
For The Dough:
Green Apples.
2 Cups All Purpose Flour
1 Cup White Sugar
1 teaspoon Salt
2/3 Cup Shortening
3/4 Cup (Or more) COLD water
Instructions:
Add the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl and mix together lightly with a fork. Cut in the shortening with a pastry knife or a fork.
( In my opinion, A fork will work best.) The mixture should resemble course bread crumbs. If there are some bigger chunks of shortening, it's totally fine!! It will all smooth out later!
Then, add the COLD water slowly until the mixture is holding together, not super wet, but enough. I just stirred everything together with a rubber spatula. No fancy mixers or anything!
Now, put the dough in the fridge until you are ready to roll it out. It's best when the dough sits in there for at least 15 minutes so it gives you plenty of time to make the filling.
Apple Filling:
Recipe:
6 Cups apples
1 Cup white sugar ( 2 or 3 more tablespoons if apples are tart)
4 Teaspoons Flour
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
So, get a big bowl and set that to the side, then you have to peel and core your apples. You CANNOT have any peels left on the apples, because when they bake they turn bitter. Blaa.
The easiest way to core and peel your apples, is to put it on an apple corer peeler. It works amazingly!! You just pull the handled spirely thing back, slide an apple on the pokey things, turn your handle, and the apple will be peeled and cored... I recommend it!
Twist the handle.
Slide the apple on.
Take off the good part. That's what it looks like in the end!
Now put half an egg in a cup or bowl. Either yolk or whites work fine. Then add a teaspoon or two of water, mix it all together and set aside.
Filling the pie pans:
Take the dough out of the fridge and roll it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out thin enough, and then put in greased pie pans. Fill with the apple filling and then put the dough on top. If you lay a "solid" sheet of dough over top, you need to poke multiple holes throughout the top.
I always do designs on the top. Here are the two I cooked Today:
Weaved basket.
Stars.
Now bake them At 350F for 60- 70 minutes. All ovens are different so check every 30 minutes. The pie is done when you slide a knife down on the edge and lift part of the sides of the crust off the pan and it doesn't look doughy. Enjoy!!
